Six months ago, EcoCard was a relatively simple idea.
What if your business card lived on your phone instead of in your wallet?
No box of cards sitting in the office. No handing someone a card with an old phone number or job title. No realising you have run out just before an event. Just one digital profile that you could share quickly and update whenever you needed to.
That was the starting point.
But over the past six months, EcoCard has grown into something much bigger.
Built from the ground up by a small New Zealand team, what started as a digital alternative to the traditional business card has evolved into a platform designed around professional communication, sharing and, most importantly, connections.
And now, EcoCard is live.
From a digital card to a connections platform
The original EcoCard concept was deliberately simple.
Create a professional profile containing your contact information, generate a QR code and give someone an easy way to access your details from their phone.
But as we started building, testing and actually thinking about how people connect in the real world, we kept coming back to the same question:
What happens after someone scans your card?
A business card is really just the beginning of a connection.
Someone might want your phone number or email address, but they might also want to visit your website, connect with you on LinkedIn, view your work, download a brochure, book a meeting or simply find you again three months later.
That thinking changed the direction of EcoCard.
Instead of trying to build a digital version of a piece of paper, we started building a platform around the entire connection.
Meet the EcoCard ecosystem
At the centre is still EcoCard, your digital business card and professional profile.
It gives you one place for your contact information, role, business, social profiles and other important details. You can share it using a QR code, direct link, NFC, email signature, social profile and more.
And unlike a printed card, when something changes, you simply update it.
No reprinting. No throwing away old cards. No outdated information still circulating.
But that’s now only one part of the platform.
EcoLinks
EcoLinks lets you go beyond the information that belongs on a business card.
Bring together your website, social channels, booking pages, products, services, videos, documents, brochures and other useful destinations in one branded page.
Instead of sending someone five different links, you can give them one useful place to start.
EcoWallet
Then there is EcoWallet.
Meeting someone is useful. Being able to find them again later is considerably more valuable.
EcoWallet gives EcoCard users a place to save and organise the people they connect with. Rather than collecting another paper card that eventually disappears into a drawer, your professional connections can stay together digitally.
Better still, when someone updates their EcoCard, you can return to their current profile rather than relying on the information they happened to give you when you first met.
EcoSwapper
EcoSwapper is where we are taking the idea of exchanging details further.
It’s designed to make it quick for two people to exchange their professional information, EcoCard profiles and EcoLinks while creating a useful connection through EcoWallet.
The aim is simple: make that moment when two people say “let’s swap details” considerably better.
Less typing names into phones. Less searching for someone on LinkedIn while they stand beside you. Less hoping you remember to follow up later.
Just swap, connect and carry on with the conversation.
Built from the ground up
EcoCard hasn’t been assembled from an off-the-shelf digital business card product or simply reskinned from another platform.
We’ve spent the past six months building it from the ground up.
And being a small team has actually shaped the way we’ve approached it.
Ideas can move quickly.
Something that starts as a conversation can become a prototype, get tested, change completely and eventually become part of the platform. Some ideas haven’t survived testing. Others have turned into features much bigger than we originally expected.
The EcoCard we’re launching today is already very different from the EcoCard we originally set out to build.
We expect exactly the same thing to be true six months from now.
We’re live, but we’re not finished
There’s always a temptation with software to wait.
One more feature. One more improvement. One more round of polishing.
But software is never really finished, and we don’t want EcoCard to be either.
So we’re live.
People can create EcoCards, start sharing them and begin using the platform today.
At the same time, we’re continuing to build.
There are features already being developed, improvements we want to make and plenty of ideas sitting on our roadmap.
Dedicated mobile apps are part of that future. So are continued improvements to the way people share, manage and build their professional connections.
Most importantly, having real people using EcoCard gives us something far more valuable than another six months of building behind closed doors: feedback.
We want to see how people actually use it.
What makes sense immediately? What takes too many clicks? What are people trying to do that we haven’t thought of? What would make EcoCard genuinely more useful tomorrow than it is today?
Those answers will help shape what comes next.
Built for individuals, and built to scale
We’ve also designed EcoCard knowing that the requirements of one person are very different from those of a business with an entire team.
For an individual, EcoCard needs to be simple – Create your profile. Make it yours. Share it.
For a business, there is another layer.
Brand consistency, employee cards, onboarding new staff, managing users and keeping company information current all become important.
That’s why EcoCard for Business has been built around dedicated business accounts where organisations can manage their team and provide staff with professionally presented EcoCards under a consistent brand.
Whether that’s a business with a handful of people or, eventually, a much larger organisation, the underlying idea remains the same:
Make professional connections simpler to create and easier to maintain.
We want EcoCard to make a difference too
There’s another part of EcoCard that matters to us.
We want the success of the platform to contribute to something beyond EcoCard itself.
As the business grows, our goal is to use some of that success to support charities, community organisations, environmental initiatives and other groups doing worthwhile things around New Zealand.
We’re calling this Making a Difference.
The programme will evolve as EcoCard grows, but we’re exploring a combination of direct support, applications, community nominations and voting campaigns where EcoCard users can have a say in which causes receive support.
Sometimes that support may be financial. In other cases there may be opportunities to contribute through technology, promotion, digital services or simply helping a great organisation reach more people.
We’re at the beginning of this part of the journey too, and we’re looking forward to seeing what it can become.
Why EcoCard?
We don’t believe paper business cards are suddenly going to disappear tomorrow. They have been around for a very long time, and they still do their basic job. We just think we can build something more useful.
- Something you don’t need to reprint when your phone number changes.
- Something that can contain more than a name, logo and a few lines of contact information.
- Something that makes sharing easy.
- Something that helps turn an introduction into an actual connection.
- And something that can keep getting better after you’ve started using it.
That’s what we’re trying to build with EcoCard.
This is just the start
Getting EcoCard live is a milestone, but it doesn’t feel like the finish line.
It feels much more like the starting line.
Six months of development has taken us from a simple idea about putting a business card on your phone to a much broader platform for professional identities, communication and connections.
Now we get to see what happens when people start using it.
We’ll keep building. We’ll keep improving. We’ll probably change our minds about things along the way. And we’ll keep listening to the people actually using EcoCard to help decide what deserves to come next.
If you’d like to be part of that journey, EcoCard is live now.
Create your card, share it with someone and let us know what you think.
We’re just getting started.
